Frequently Asked Questions
Q. Will I get the treatment I need here in Spain? A. Providing you have the correct medical cover, reciprocal UK health (E106 or E121) cover or a private health insurance policy then you should not have a problem receiving the treatment you need.
Q. Can I choose the hospital where I have my treatment? A. Your consultant will usually refer you to the hospital that specialises in the treatment of the cancer you have, this may not be the one you currently attend or the nearest to your home.
Q. Can I refuse treatment? A. Yes, but it is not advisible.
Q. Will I need an operation? A. It depends on the type of cancer you have been diagnosed with. Your consultant will explain the course of treatment that offers the best results, this may be chemotherapy and an operation or an operation followed by chemotherapy or radiotherapy.
Q. I have a fear of needles how will I manage if I have to have regular treatment by intravenous drip or regular injections? A. Mention this to your consultant there may be an alternative method of delivering your treatment.
Q. I have heard that chemotherapy can produce some bad side effects, is this true? A. All people tolerate chemotherapy differently so it is impossible to say how you will react. Some patients have some side effects while others do not, as a general rule the onset of side effects depend on the strength of your prescription. Possible side effects include:- Tiredness, nausea, sickness, hair loss, loss of appetite, intolerance of cold, aches to limbs, brittle nails, mouth ulcers or a metallic taste in the mouth. If you experience any of these side effects speak to your consultant he/she may be able to prescribe something to relieve the symptoms.
Q. If I lose my hair will it grow back? A. Yes, but sometimes it may grow back a different colour or texture. You are advised not to have a perm or highlights for at least 12 months after your treatment finishes to allow the chemical of your treatment to leave you body.
Q. Will I have the same side effects if I have Radiotherapy? A. No, however you may experience tiredness and ‘sunburn’ blisters.
Q. Will I be cured? A. Many patients survive cancer and go on to live long and healthy lives. Your consultant can tell you the prognosis.
Q. Can I return to the UK for treatment? A. This depends on whether the UK will allow you to return to the UK for treatment or they would prefer you to have your treatment here. It will also depend on your fitness to travel, some airlines require additional insurance for situations like this. Q. I live alone, can I get help form the Spanish health system? A. In Spain it is usually the family who care for relatives who are ill however, it may be possible to get a nurse or care assistant from the local Centro de Salud, ask your GP. If help is not available contact your nearest MABS group.
